National Formosa University has upgraded the basketball court in its dormitory area, renovating it into the "Photonics Covered Court," with an opening ceremony held on 5/23 (Friday). The court accommodates 3 standard basketball courts and features a steel-frame rain-shelter design with a 34-meter span and no support columns in the middle — making it the largest-span covered sports court in Taiwan. Beyond enhancing dormitory living amenities, this project also reflects NFU's ongoing efforts to promote a culture of sports and health on campus.
The court can be used for sports such as basketball and volleyball. The upgrade project included resurfacing the court, constructing a rain-shelter structure, and installing energy-efficient lighting. The steel-frame, gable-shaped roof truss design creates an open space with no central columns, improving the court's openness and flexibility of use, while also providing effective drainage and rain protection.
Solar panels have also been installed on the court's roof, with a capacity of 361.6 kWp, expected to generate more than 670,000 kWh of electricity annually. The electricity generated will be sold to Taiwan Power Company. Through the introduction of this photovoltaic system, NFU is putting green energy utilization and energy circulation into practice.
The opening ceremony was presided over by NFU President Chang Hsin-Liang, with the construction contractor "Jinqunjie Co., Ltd." represented by its three General Managers, Ho Tzu-Jou, Chiang Yen-Shih, and Liu Chih-Chieh, along with faculty and members of the Student Dormitory Executive Committee also in attendance. The event featured an opening performance by the student Rock Music Club, followed by a 3-on-3 basketball exhibition match by NFU's Men's Basketball Team, showcasing students' diverse talents and enthusiasm for sports, creating a lively atmosphere at the event.
NFU President Chang Hsin-Liang stated that this is NFU's first covered sports court, meaning future events held here will no longer be limited by weather conditions. He also noted that the court offers energy-saving and carbon-reduction benefits, continuing the university's commitment to social responsibility, while also providing students with a better venue for after-class interaction, allowing them to build teamwork through sports while maintaining their health.
Chang further emphasized that NFU has always placed students' needs first, and that a second covered court will be built at the university's Third Campus in the future. He expressed hope that the university can continue providing students with excellent teaching and sports facilities, so that students can not only excel in the field of technology, but also engage in learning across the humanities and arts.
Ho Tzu-Jou, General Manager of Jinqunjie Co., Ltd., is a graduate of NFU's Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering (Class of 2010) and also an NFU Outstanding Alumnus. He stated that typical covered courts have a span of around 20-some meters, while this court's 34-meter span is the largest of its kind in Taiwan. He noted that he was willing to absorb the additional cost in order to provide a better facility for his fellow alumni.
Wang Chih-Chia, Chairman of the Student Dormitory Executive Committee, stated that the Photonics Covered Court has a fresh new appearance, with an overall design that more closely reflects students' actual needs. Whether during the day or at night, the court's lighting and safety have been greatly improved, allowing students to exercise with peace of mind. In the past, the court would be unusable whenever it rained, but that issue has now been resolved. For students, he said, this is not only an upgrade to their sports facility, but also an improvement to their overall quality of life.
