National Formosa University's Freshman Week activities have officially kicked off with full energy this year! Among the most anticipated events, the "3-on-3 Tiger Power Basketball Tournament" made its exciting debut on September 2 (Tuesday) at the newly completed Photonics Dormitory Covered Court, drawing enthusiastic participation from 32 teams representing various departments, with the atmosphere on-site absolutely electric!
The tournament was carefully organized by the Office of Student Affairs' Extracurricular Activities Guidance Section. Freshmen and dormitory residents in particular participated with great enthusiasm, showcasing high levels of engagement and youthful energy. This match was not only the first official game held since the court's opening, but also gave freshmen an opportunity to express themselves and build friendships. The Photonics Covered Court features complete lighting and shelter facilities, unaffected by weather conditions, providing a stable and safe environment for competition so that students can focus on the game without worry.
Lin Yi-Chuan, Dean of the Office of Student Affairs, stated that the tournament was intended to help freshmen integrate more quickly into campus life, building friendships and a sense of belonging through athletic competition. He also expressed hope that the Photonics Dormitory Covered Court would become an important venue for students to share memories of their youth. The atmosphere at the venue was lively, with students working up a sweat through competition, developing exercise habits, and fostering exchange and teamwork throughout the process. The tournament was not only a challenge of physical fitness and skill, but also an important opportunity for freshmen to adjust to university life.
To ensure the tournament ran smoothly, the Extracurricular Activities Guidance Section assembled a working team made up of student club members and department student association officers, dividing responsibilities for venue setup, scheduling, scorekeeping, and live countdowns — demonstrating strong organizational and execution skills among the students. In addition, four members of the university's own basketball team served as referees, maintaining the fairness and professionalism of the competition and ensuring the tournament proceeded smoothly in a fair and orderly manner.
Chen Po-Wen from the Department of Automation Engineering and Yang Chun-Hao from the Department of Multimedia Design said, "We're really happy that after entering NFU together, we got to compete against all kinds of opponents on this court — the whole experience was full of passion and memories." The two are practically regulars at the dormitory basketball court, frequently playing pickup games with fellow students since the court opened. Wang Sheng-Hsiang from the Department of Vehicle Engineering and Hsu Yi-Hsin from the Department of Electrical Engineering also formed a duo after meeting as basketball buddies while playing at the dormitory court.
This particular pairing was truly a matter of fate! Chiu Yung-Fu and Chen Yu-Cheng, both from the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management, shared that the two had not known each other beforehand, but developed great chemistry through the competition, leaving behind unforgettable memories. This dormitory basketball tournament didn't just let students show off their skills — it also brought them closer together. From strangers to teammates fighting side by side, from opponents on the court to friends off the court — that's what makes college life truly special!
To celebrate the successful tournament, the organizers presented trophies and cash prizes to recognize the outstanding performance of the winning teams, and encouraged all participating students to actively engage in on-campus activities alongside their studies, cultivating diverse skills and interpersonal connections — reflecting the university's educational philosophy of valuing both learning and life experience. It is hoped that all freshmen will continue to explore and grow steadily over the next four years, embarking on their own remarkable college journey.
