A faculty-student team from National Formosa University's Department of Electrical Engineering won the Special Excellence Award (1st Place) in the Graduate Full-Custom Design Category at the "2025 National University IC Design Competition" finals on 5/17 (Saturday). The team also received an Honorable Mention and a Design Completion Award in the same category, demonstrating NFU's strong capabilities and potential in the field of integrated circuit design.
The competition invited renowned domestic ICT companies, including Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), MediaTek Inc. (MTK), and the Electronic and Optoelectronic System Research Laboratories of the Industrial Technology Research Institute, to set the competition topics with their senior professionals. The topics were announced on the day of the competition, comprehensively testing students' circuit design skills and their proficiency with computer-aided design tools.
System-on-chip design and manufacturing represent one of Taiwan's key industrial strengths, and are also a core technology underpinning the application of smart electronics in fields such as biomedicine, green energy, information and communications, consumer electronics, and automotive electronics. The competition is guided and organized by the Ministry of Education and the Taiwan Integrated Circuit Design Society, and has become an annual highlight for related academic departments nationwide, earning strong recognition and support from both academia and industry.
This year's competition team was supervised by NFU Department of Electrical Engineering Professor Lu Chi-Chang and Associate Professor Chen Hou-Ming. Chen Hou-Ming, who also serves as Chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering, stated that a total of 796 teams participated in this year's competition, with only 79 teams advancing to the finals. After the judging process, the overall award rate was approximately 6.6%, reflecting the intensity of the competition and fully demonstrating the students' solid professional training, as well as its close alignment with industry needs.
