National Formosa University's Art Center held the opening ceremony and guided tour for the "Between Flowers and Water's Reflection" duo art exhibition on 4/17 (Thursday). This exhibition invites NFU Department of Multimedia Design professors Chu Wen-Hao and Liao Tun-Ju to present a joint show featuring more than 40 works of art, offering a fresh perspective on nature through the reinterpretation of imagery inspired by flowers and water.
The "Between Flowers and Water's Reflection" duo exhibition takes natural elements as its central theme, blending the two artists' distinct styles and creative vocabularies. Professor Chu Wen-Hao's work centers on "Water's Reflection," using oil paint and watercolor to showcase, through delicate brushwork and layered light and shadow, the graceful flow of light on water and the aesthetic of ever-changing yet timeless transformation found in nature.
Professor Liao Tun-Ju, meanwhile, focuses on "Between Flowers," combining botanical illustration and meticulous gongbi-style floral painting with abstract techniques, blending in the decorative quality of the traditional "gold-and-jade landscape" style of Chinese landscape painting to create an original visual aesthetic she calls "a touch of gold," reinterpreting the elegance and vitality of flowers.
Chen Pi-Chun, Director of the Yunlin County Government's Department of Culture and Tourism, stated that this exhibition integrates static and dynamic elements of nature, even incorporating digital technology applications, and that the two artists' works embody a breakthrough in cultural heritage and sustainability. She noted that Yunlin County is currently planning to build its first art museum in the Huwei High Speed Rail Special District, with future plans to invite domestic and international artworks to be exhibited in Yunlin.
NFU Vice President Chuang Wei-Chun stated that although NFU is a technology-oriented university, both faculty and students possess a strong appreciation for the arts. He noted that the event opened with violin and guitar performances by Chung Cheng-Ta, Director of the Language Teaching Center, and Li Jui-Lin, Director of the Career Development Center, followed by the diverse array of works presented by Professors Chu Wen-Hao and Liao Tun-Ju of the Department of Multimedia Design, spanning paintings and art installations. He thanked them for bringing this artistic feast to campus, filling it with a beautiful artistic atmosphere.
Lin Chin-Yang, Chairman of the Feng Tay Charity Foundation, also attended the opening to offer his congratulations, stating that through the artists' works, one can see the fusion of traditional and contemporary art — the excellent present will become the tradition of the next generation. He thanked the artists for enriching viewers' hearts and minds through this exhibition.
During the guided tour, artist Professor Chu Wen-Hao shared that the animated works in the exhibition were created using AI technology, transforming both his and Professor Liao Tun-Ju's works into a 15-minute video. He noted that with the help of technology, the production timeline — which would traditionally have taken two years — was significantly shortened to just three months.
Artist Professor Liao Tun-Ju stated that the works exhibited in this show, the "Crystallization" and "Vase of Flowers" series, are entirely new creations. Drawing on the creative spirit of Japanese botanical painting, she moved beyond traditional cun (texturing) techniques, using lotus leaves to represent leaf veins, while drawing inspiration from the color palette of Tang Dynasty gold-and-jade landscape painting, making extensive use of azurite, malachite green, and gold pigment to capture the fleeting beauty of flowers and their symbolic meaning of peace.
This exhibition features a diverse range of media, including oil painting, watercolor, ink wash painting, acrylic, plant leaves, installation art, and multimedia, offering viewers a varied visual experience. The exhibition runs from today through 5/16 (Friday) at the Exhibition Room, Building 3, NFU's Second Campus. All are warmly welcome to visit.
