In today's society, where human-machine interaction is deeply integrated, human factors engineering plays a key role in improving system performance, ensuring user safety, and promoting social sustainability. National Formosa University's Department of Industrial Management, together with the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society of the R.O.C., co-organized the "32nd Annual Conference of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society of the R.O.C.," which concluded successfully on 3/9 (Sunday). Themed "Joining Hands to Create a Green Future — Human-Centered, Toward Sustainability," the event explored the applications of human factors engineering in fields such as smart manufacturing, sustainable design, digital transformation, and human factors safety.
The three-day conference attracted more than 350 domestic and international scholars, experts, and industry professionals from 11 countries, including Switzerland, Canada, Germany, South Africa, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Hong Kong. Nearly 150 paper and student competition submissions were received, with particular focus on the application of human factors engineering in sustainable design and the circular economy, reflecting global interest in the trends of human factors engineering and social sustainability.
The conference featured multiple keynote speeches, academic presentations, and industry forums, inviting internationally renowned experts as speakers, including International Ergonomics Association President Professor Andrew Thatcher, Nanyang Technological University Professor Chen Chun-Hsien, University of Alberta Associate Professor Bin Zheng, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology Distinguished Professor Chi Chia-Fen, and William Thorp, Technical Sales Director of Germany's Simi company, among others, who discussed cutting-edge topics such as AI and human factors engineering, medical technology innovation, surgical haptic feedback, transportation safety, and markerless motion tracking technology.
The industry forums covered fields such as national defense, design, healthcare, occupational safety, transportation, and aerospace. In the field of national defense, discussions focused on combat training monitoring and drone development, along with opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration and application; in the field of healthcare, the focus was on AI-assisted medicine, patient safety, and medical quality management. The conference also featured student paper and design competitions, showcasing the younger generation's outstanding achievements in smart technology and innovation in human factors engineering.
NFU President Chang Hsin-Liang expressed gratitude to Distinguished Professor Lin Yi-Kuei, Convener of the National Science and Technology Council's Division of Industrial Engineering and Management, Su Kuo-Wei, President of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, and the Feng Tay Charity Foundation, for their support of this event. He noted that this conference reflects Taiwan's international influence in the field of human factors engineering, and expressed hope that through further international exchange in the future, the global development and application value of human factors engineering can continue to be advanced.
