2024 Smart Innovation Cross-Disciplinary Competition — NFU Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering Wins One Bronze and One Honorable Mention

 The Ministry of Education held the awards ceremony for the "2024 National College and University Smart Innovation and Cross-Disciplinary Integration Creative Competition" on 12/19 (Thursday). A faculty-student team led by Professor Chen Kuo-Yi from National Formosa University's Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering won 3rd Place and an Honorable Mention with their projects "Water Tank Foreign Object Recognition" and "Inline Skating Posture Detection Through Pose Recognition," respectively.

The "National College and University Smart Innovation and Cross-Disciplinary Integration Creative Competition" featured 4 categories — IoT and Fintech, Smart Machines, Digital Sustainability Technology, and Motion-Sensing Interactive Technology — with a total of 387 teams from 72 schools nationwide registering to participate. The competition encourages faculty and students at colleges and universities to develop skills in the practical design of ICT hardware and software, cultivating talent in smart innovation and cross-disciplinary integration, while linking industry-research and community resources to expand value creation and innovation/entrepreneurship pathways for software creation talent.

NFU won 3rd Place in the IoT and Fintech category with the project "Water Tank Foreign Object Recognition," developed by Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering students Liao Chen-Yu, Huang Tzu-Hsu, Wang Li-Ting, and Chen Shih-Yu.

The project combines smartphone and computer technology to achieve real-time monitoring of conditions inside a water tank. The system can prevent the intrusion of foreign objects and reduce the time and labor costs associated with regular manual inspections, allowing users to view images of the tank's interior and the number of foreign objects present through a software application. The system also periodically generates statistical charts based on the number of foreign objects and when they appear, notifying users via LINE, effectively improving both convenience and management efficiency.

By combining smartphone and computer technology, users can monitor conditions inside the water tank, preventing the intrusion of foreign objects and saving time on regular inspections. Through the software, users can view each captured image along with its complexity, and the software will also periodically send statistical charts to users via LINE.

Another project supervised by NFU Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering Professor Chen Kuo-Yi, titled "Inline Skating Posture Detection Through Pose Recognition," won an Honorable Mention in the Motion-Sensing Interactive Technology category, developed by Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering students Hsiao Yu-Tang, Chang Hsin-Yun, Yang Chih-Ning, and Peng Yu-Hsuan.

The project uses a camera to capture a full-body view of an athlete during inline skating, transmitting the footage to a computer for human pose recognition to check whether the athlete's posture meets competition standards. If an incorrect posture is detected, the system automatically captures the image for further review by coaches or judges. This technology not only improves the precision of inline skating instruction and competitions, but also helps athletes adjust their movements in real time to achieve improvement.
