NFU Wins 3 Awards at "Green Idea International Invention and Design Competition" — Showcasing Green Technology and Sustainable Innovation

The 7th "Green Idea International Invention and Design Competition" concluded successfully after two days, on 8/2 (Saturday). A faculty-student team from National Formosa University's Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, under the guidance of Distinguished Professor Hsu Yung-Ho, delivered an outstanding performance, winning the Titanium Award in the "Invention Category — Youth Group" with their project "Smart Dual-Barrel Serving Machine." Another project, "Smart Green-Energy Animal Identification Platform," won the Silver Award in the "Invention Category — General Group" as well as the "Judges' Special Award," bringing home a total of three major awards.

This year's competition featured three main categories: the Design Category, the Invention Category — General Group, and the Invention Category — Youth Group, attracting more than 200 teams from 9 countries, including Taiwan, Singapore, South Korea, and Malaysia, to compete together. Participants spanned diverse age groups and professional backgrounds, focusing on green technology, smart applications, and sustainable innovation, presenting innovative inventions and designs that address energy and environmental protection issues.

The Titanium Award in this competition is reserved for teams ranking in the top 10% of all entries. NFU's Titanium Award-winning project in the "Invention Category — Youth Group" was the "Smart Dual-Barrel Serving Machine," developed by Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering student Lin Ching-Ya. Centered on energy efficiency, performance, and technical innovation, the project offers a solution to the problems of high energy consumption, limited shot variety, and inconvenient operation found in traditional table tennis serving machines.

NFU Computer Science and Information Engineering students Chen Chi-Jen and Wang Chih-Yu were awarded the Silver Award in the "Invention Category — General Group" as well as the "Judges' Special Award" for their project "Smart Green-Energy Animal Identification Platform." The project combines solar power supply with visual recognition to enable real-time monitoring and precise identification, comprehensively improving the efficiency of TNvR operations (Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate, Release), reducing the risks of stray animal reproduction and rabies transmission, while also cutting down on the manpower and resources typically required for such work.

Hsu Yung-Ho, the supervising instructor for NFU's Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering team, stated that these achievements demonstrate not only the students' ability to apply their professional knowledge to practical innovation, but also their commitment to environmental sustainability through technology. The "Smart Dual-Barrel Serving Machine" features a dual-barrel design that can fire balls alternately or simultaneously, simulating varied shot trajectories while reducing manufacturing and transportation costs, helping to lower its carbon footprint. The "Smart Green-Energy Animal Identification Platform," meanwhile, upholds principles of green environmental protection and animal welfare, with the hope of offering innovative solutions for "healthy communities" and "ecological sustainability."
